Music for Lent 3

This weekend’s music features some extremely beautiful polyphony from Lassus and Scarlatti. Here’s a sneak peak of Missa Puisque j’ay perdu by Lassus:

The Motets for the Mass are by Scarlatti, both focus on the rightness of God’s commandments, appropriate given this Sunday’s Gospel Reading of the cleansing of the Temple. The Offertory Motet are words from Psalm 18 - The statutes of the Lord are right, and rejoice the heart – and the Offertory Motet Exsurge Domine originally set as the Gradual for Lent III shares its name with the Papal Bull of Leo X, published in 1520, refuting the heresy and errors of Luther.
